Question 1

How difficult is the Pikey Peak Trek?

Accepted Answer

It is moderate. We walk 5 to 7 hours a day on steady trails, with one early summit climb to 4,065 m. If you can manage a few long hill days at home, you should be fine. The altitude is the main thing to respect, which is why we sleep at 3,640 m the night before the summit.

Question 2

What is the best time for the Pikey Peak Trek?

Accepted Answer

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) give the clearest views and the most reliable weather. Winter can be cold and the higher lodges may close. We avoid the monsoon months because of cloud, leeches on the lower trail and slippery paths.

Question 3

Can I get altitude sickness on this trek?

Accepted Answer

It is possible above 3,000 m, though the schedule is short and the gains are modest. We keep the sleeping altitude gain to about 500 m a day above 3,000 m, and we watch for headache, nausea and poor sleep. If symptoms appear we descend, and our guide carries a first-aid kit and a pulse oximeter.

Question 4

What are the teahouses like on the Pikey Peak route?

Accepted Answer

They are simple family lodges with shared bathrooms and basic menus of dal bhat, noodles and eggs. The higher lodges at base camp have limited rooms and no heating, so a good sleeping bag matters. We book ahead where we can, but in peak season the choice is smaller than on the main Everest trail.

Question 5

Can I charge devices and get internet on the trek?

Accepted Answer

Charging is available at some lodges for a small fee, and it is unreliable higher up, so bring a power bank. Mobile signal is patchy and often absent above Jhapre. We treat the trek as a mostly offline week.

Question 6

Do I need insurance for this trek?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You need travel insurance that covers trekking to 4,065 m and, ideally, helicopter evacuation. We ask for your policy details before departure. The drive to Dhap and the road from Phaplu can also be delayed, so cover for trip disruption helps.
